Our Mission: Church & Ministry
Supporting worship, preserving sacred space, and sustaining the spiritual life of Wrestlingworth.
Honouring Heritage, Nurturing Faith
Church And Poor's Charity was established with two intertwined purposes: to support the ministry of the Church and to care for those in need. Our mission reflects a centuries-old understanding that spiritual and material well-being are deeply connected.
Supporting Ministry & Tradition
One of our founding objects was the "payment to the Rector of the Rectory of Wrestlingworth." While the language is old-fashioned, the purpose remains vital: we support the ongoing ministry and pastoral care that sustains the spiritual life of the parish.
This includes assisting with the costs of worship, supporting clergy in their work, and helping maintain the traditions that connect generations of Wrestlingworth residents to their shared faith and history.
In a rural community where churches serve as gathering places for weddings, baptisms, funerals, and seasonal celebrations, our support helps ensure these moments of meaning continue for future generations.
Preserving St Peter's Church
St Peter's Church is more than a building—it is the architectural and spiritual heart of Wrestlingworth. Dating back to the 12th century, with significant Victorian restoration, it stands as a Grade II listed monument to centuries of faith, community, and craftsmanship.
Our charity contributes to the ongoing care and maintenance of the church fabric, helping to address repairs, preserve historic features, and ensure the building remains a safe and welcoming space for worship and community events.
From the Norman stonework to the Victorian stained glass, every element tells a story. By supporting preservation efforts, we honour the generations who built, maintained, and prayed in this sacred space.
Our Approach
Respectful Stewardship
We work collaboratively with the Parochial Church Council, clergy, and congregation to identify priorities and allocate resources responsibly.
Long-Term Vision
Our support is not transactional but relational—we think in terms of decades, not years, ensuring continuity for future generations.
Community Connection
We recognise that the church serves the whole village, regardless of individual belief, as a place of memory, gathering, and shared heritage.
Transparency
All expenditure is carefully documented and reported to the Charity Commission, ensuring accountability and public trust.
